When Mayor Jim Watson proclaimed Thursday as Gaby Dabrowski Day in Ottawa, the most accomplished women’s doubles tennis player in Canadian history couldn’t help but remember her earliest days in the sport.
That was when Dabrowski and her father, Yurek, would spend endless hours on the courts in her Blossom Park neighbourhood, which have since been named in her honour.“We had access to the public courts that were free,” said Dabrowski, home for the first time since November 2019 due to the difficulties of COVID-19 precautions and her hectic professional tour schedule. “I was just reminded by my neighbours of that the other day. We would walk to the courts with that ball machine contraption that probably looked like something out of a Sci-Fi movie.”
