Tornado watch in effect for Ottawa, Environment Canada says

The UV index will be very high again Sunday

Environment Canada has issued a tornado watch for the Ottawa area.

The weather advisory issued at 10:36 a.m. Sunday says “conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes.”

Thunderstorms are expected to roll through much of central and eastern Ontario this afternoon and the early evening, according to the weather agency.

“Damaging wind gusts, hail, and torrential downpours giving rainfall totals in excess of 50 mm are possible. There is also a threat of a few tornadoes.”

Officials are advising people to take cover when severe weather approaches and to stay indoors.

Sunday high of 28

The high on Sunday will be 28 C, with the humidex making it feel like 36. The UV index will be 8 or very high and wind gusts will pick up to around 40 km/h.

Sunday evening the temperature will cool down to 18 C with showers tapering off into the night. Up to 15 millimetres of rain is expected Sunday evening.
